The Ultimate Source For Healthy Foods

There's an old African saying that goes 'food is food. It may not make any sense when read as is, but when the emphasis is placed on the fact that we not only eat for the fun of it, but for the sake of our health and survival, it makes perfect sense. Food is for our natural health. We eat to live. But what exactly do we put in our plates to qualify as food? Is it all considered healthy? For example, I love junk food. Does it count? 'Provided you space it out,' my gorgeous doctor says. Eat lots of fruits too. Then she goes on to say the 'Apple a day' proverb that she always tells. What is there to know about proper eating habits? Here's how:

Fruits - The doctor's so right. Apples have vitamin C, which aids the body in absorbing iron, minerals and fiber. So do many other fruits. Essentially, eating two rations of any kind of fruit is advised.

Vegetables - Popeye the sailor is one lover of vegetables. The rate at which he gobbles spinach is probably why he's so strong. Spinach contains an all-in-one compound of vitamins A, B6 and C, riboflavin, calcium, magnesium and iron. It doesn't give you muscles but at least it takes care of your skin, bones and hair!

Grains - Who doesn't love rice? Universally recognized as the most eaten grain, it is found at the bottom of the nutritionist's food pyramid, along with other grains like wheat and oats that we rarely eat whole because we'll eat them in our pasta, cereal and flour. All grains are considered 'highly nutritious' by the nutritionists and recommend them in any diet. The best part is that grains are tasty and totally affordable. Their benefit is that they can be incorporated in any meal at any time of the day.

Meats and Nuts - Meat, white or red, is irresistible to any age. White meat, though regarded as more expensive is considered a mild serving of protein, glycogen and myoglobin. Found in much seafood and poultry, and reptiles, for those with adventurous appetites. Red meat is basically beef, mutton, goat meat, rabbit and gazelle, zebra for the lustful eater. Cashew nuts, peanuts, macadamia nuts and almonds are a great source of energy and roughage. The best part is that they can be eaten as snacks and are irresistibly tasty. So next time you sit down to eat, always ensure you have a bit of these four in your plate before you dig in.
